Yeah, this will work

#BREAKING: I filed a lawsuit to dissolve the National Rifle Association for years of self-dealing and illegal conduct.

The @NRA is fraught with fraud and abuse.

No organization is above the law.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James made a “major national announcement” on Thursday after Deutsche Bank turned over Trump’s financial documents.

Letitia James said her office is seeking an order to dissolve the NRA in its entirety during a press conference.

The investigation into the NRA began in 2019.

Letitia James said the NRA was serving as a personal piggy bank for Wayne LaPierre, the Chief Executive of the NRA.

Wayne LaPierre allegedly “spent more than $3.6 million on luxury black car services and travel consultants in the last two years,” according to Letitia James.

Yeah. Yawn.

I don’t know if there is a connection between the dishonorable act by the Kraut bank and this announcement.

A few small changes in punctuation that would yield massive changes

Total Gun Sales Control By “Minor” Textual Changes.

Here is the operative part of Senate Bill S. 4068 in it’s entirety:

Section 922(t)(1)(B) of title 18, United States Code, is amended—

(1) by striking “(i)”;

(2) by striking “; or” and inserting “; and”; and

(3) by striking clause (ii).

Doesn’t look like much, does it? Even clause (ii) itself is only one sentence long, so what’s the problem?

This is the part of the federal law that it would apply to:

(t)
(1)
Beginning on the date that is 30 days after the Attorney General notifies licensees under section 103(d) of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act that the national instant criminal background check system is established, a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer shall not transfer a firearm to any other person who is not licensed under this chapter, unless—
(A)
before the completion of the transfer, the licensee contacts the national instant criminal background check system established under section 103 of that Act;
(B)
(i)
the system provides the licensee with a unique identification number; or
(ii)
3 business days (meaning a day on which State offices are open) have elapsed since the licensee contacted the system, and the system has not notified the licensee that the receipt of a firearm by such other person would violate subsection (g) or (n) of this section; and
(C)
the transferor has verified the identity of the transferee by examining a valid identification document (as defined in section 1028(d) of this title) of the transferee containing a photograph of the transferee.

So all it does is say you always get a unique ID number, and your transfer goes through when your identity has been verified. IOW, you’re a good guy. Sounds like common sense, right?


Guess again.


The problem is, that this measure, brought out by anti-gun zealot Senator Richard Blumenthal, (D-CT) and proven stolen valor liar, would eliminate the all-American concept of assumption of innocence from the NICS background check that is universal when purchasing a firearm from a registered dealer ( or in states that have removed your right to freely trade with other citizens, and now “close the gun show loophole” by forcing such transactions to go through the NICS system ).

What it really means is that the 3 day processing window would cease to exist. The one that says “our wonderful super computer zillion dollar system can instantly tell if you’re a criminal or not, but let’s be super safe and give it 3 days to work just in case”. They would now have FOREVER to return a response. And seeing how obviously weaponized against free citizens huge parts of the federal government have become, you can pretty much assume that this is exactly what will happen.

Hell, in NJ it’s been the law for decades that the state has 30 days to process your firearms permit, yet they routinely take 6 - 8 months. And there’s not a damn thing you can about it.

And now, with the ‘rona and the riots, when gun sales are through the roof, and the NICS system is up 75%, more than 2.5 million new gun owners, shelves empty in every gun shop in the country, police departments defunded or stood down, people living in fear for their lives and livelihoods, NOW this asshat liar pulls this kind of stunt, introducing such a bill June 25?

Under current law, if NICS cannot be completed in three business days, a federally licensed dealer can still transfer a firearm. While the setup of NICS is not ideal, the current setup has several points that make it much fairer than various licensing and waiting period schemes:

It presumes that someone seeking to buy a firearm is law-abiding.
It places the burden to deny a firearms transaction on the government.
It also does not subject someone trying to exercise their rights into an indefinite wait.

Blumenthal’s bill changes that. It removes the three business day limit on a delay. In other words, if there is a delay for whatever reason (NICS is down, confusion), a law-abiding citizen is denied the right to purchase a firearm until the delay gets resolved, and without the time limit, that can be potential for some serious, life-threatening abuse.

Imagine what IRS workers under Lois Lerner did to the Tea Party’s applications for tax-exempt status being applied to firearm purchases run through NICS.

But in Blumenthal’s mind, that’s all okay. Because to him, gun ownership isn’t a right – it’s a privilege that should be determined by the government.

Contact your reps ASAP. This one has to go down in flames.

My Perspective on that black thing

The Bearable Whiteness Of Being

I wanted to post this last night, but I was too tired. We were listening to Hannity on FoxNews, going on and on and on and ON about how the police are totally needed to curb the problem of black on black violence in the big cities.

While he is right, that’s a bit of sleight of hand. What is really needed is black people to act responsibly and to curb their base violent tendencies, and reject the idea that drugs, crime, pimps, and gangs are cool.

While Hannity was throwing out numbers, statistics, and pictures of the latest batch of black children killed in the crossfire, I realized that I’d like to offer some of my own personal statistics. Perhaps they don’t count, because “white privilege”, but they remain true regardless.

I live in a condo park. There is another smaller condo park at the top of the hill. Down at the bottom of the hill is a newer small complex of 3 townhouses. The three places together sit on about 85 acres, and that rough measurement includes some woods, and two small ponds. Our park has 438 units, the other condo park has 72 units, and the apartment complex has 36 units. So 546 units total; about 1000 people live here. The two condo parks were built in the late 1970s; the apartments are from about 2015. Until those apartments went in, this place was 98% lily white, but HUD and Obama demanded affordable diversity housing, so the new place has lots of ethnic residents.

There are 640 acres per square mile, so 1000 people on 85 acres is about 7950 people per square mile, a living density in the same arena as many urban areas.

We have not had any crime or problems since “the darkies” moved in. And we had about 0 crime before that. Nobody really cares here if you look or talk different, welcome to the street, keep the music down, and clean up after your dog.

So, here are our statistics

murders in the last 40 years: 0

shootings in the last 40 years: 0

robberies in the last 40 years: 0

rapes in the last 40 years: 0

burglaries in the last 40 years: less than 5, and they happened long before I moved here in 1997. Burglars got caught, residents bought guns and alarm systems, problem solved.

arson cases in the last 40 years: 0

drug busts in the last 40 years: 0

child abductions in the last 40 years: 1, in which a divorced dad kept his visiting daughter a couple days longer than he was allowed. Charges dropped.

car theft in the last 40 years: 0. Ok, maybe 1 temporary one. And that was a repo where the tow truck guys took the wrong Audi from a parking lot that had 6 of them, 3 the same color. Oopsie!

DUI arrests: maybe a couple, ex post facto. About 8 years ago I remember seeing a car parked halfway over the parking spot on the hill going down to the pond. And somebody did miss one of the sharp road corners late one night 5 years ago and took a chunk out of the corner of one of the buildings.

Do we have continuous and intimidating police presence here? Oh hella no. Although the Clinton cops use our road as a shortcut to get to the diner, we’re actually in Union Township, which doesn’t have a police department. The State Police give us what coverage we need, which is just about none. They also use our private road as a shortcut, as we have exits and entrance ramps to the highway near both ends of our village.

So it isn’t the cops that keep our area crime free. It’s the people who live here. It’s their attitude of self-respect and neighborliness. A generally higher level of education and income might have something to do with it, although us condo people are the poor folks in this area. Which doesn’t mean that this place is a run down garbage dump either. It’s in good repair, pretty clean, no junk cars, no public drunks, no vagrants, and only a couple low-res residents.

To me this is perfectly normal. Just people being people. Maybe if Hannity’s people were people instead of dimwitted feral animals, they wouldn’t need tons of policing either.

PS - this part of the state is so Republican that half the time the Democrats can’t even find a candidate for some of the local government positions. They don’t get elected anyway, so why bother? We do have some liberals here, but they keep their yaps shut because the rest of us just laugh at their foolishness.

Gun Sales Surge In NYC Suburbs As Rioting Gets Closer

Four hour wait just to get in to Long Island gun shops

“You don’t need a gun to protect yourself, just call the police” is curiously no longer something people are arguing.

In the last several days we’ve seen many people on social media say that they’ve called the police and have been told the response either wouldn’t happen or would take a long time. It seems now more than ever that Americans increasingly aren’t relying on the police to protect them and are taking things into their own hands.

Unrest across New York and America has left some feeling concerned for their safety, and prompting dozens to line up outside a Long Island gun shop Tuesday.

Fruma Tannenbaum stood in the long line outside LI Outdoorsman in Rockville Centre. Her wait for a weapon was triggered by fears of demonstrations across the country.

“I would like to protect my property in case anybody comes on and wants to loot, steal, do anything to me,” says Tannenbaum. “I want to be prepared and I want to be able to protect myself and my family.”

The fears come in response to a week of protests against the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, in which some have turned to fires, looting and clashes with police.

It was a similar scene at Coliseum Gun Traders in Uniondale, where the owner says dozens of people are waiting to buy weapons and ammo.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen people really scared,” says Andrew Chernoff. “They’re saying that they definitely want something to be able to defend themselves and they’re scared there’s going to be civil unrest. That they’re going to need to defend themselves from.”

Gong estimated his store has seen sales rise within the last week as much as 20 percent. Video taken at his store showed several mask-wearing customers patiently waiting in line to enter.

“They wait three, four hours to enter the store,” he said. During the pandemic, the store has reduced its hours, opening three times a week for about four to six hours.

The uptick in sales stems directly from the protests, he said.

Gong, who is Chinese, said most of his customers are people from minority communities who want to support his business because it’s minority-owned. They’re buying guns now out of fear of criminals, not police, he said when asked why his customers have said they want a gun now.

“Criminals, looters,” he said. “They’re not going to buy guns for cops, they’re going to buy guns for the criminals.”

Long Island gun store owners said they’ve seen spikes in sales before: Y2K, the passage of gun control laws, before and after elections. But this time is different, they said.

“This is like total new shooters,” said John Sweezey, the owner of Camp-Site Sport Shop in Huntington. “New gun owners.”

Michael Pucci, who owns Orion 7 Enterprises in Middle Island, said half the calls to his store are from women. The store specializes in historical, collectible firearms, but it also stocks some modern rifles and shotguns.

Some waiting outside Long Island gun stores on Wednesday condemned Floyd’s killing and said they support peaceful protests. It was the looters who scared them — and the prospect of widespread looting on Long Island in particular.

And the sin of it is, these frightened libs will go right back to voting Democrat once this is over. Because. They. Will. Never. Learn.

And the perhaps even bigger sin is, Long Island has been inundated with MS-13 for at least a decade. There are thousands of them there, stealing, killing, raping, beating, dealing drugs. But ... OMG those poor immigrants!! ... just look the other way.

No SCOTUS Bump For Bump Stocks

Supremes Won’t Take Bump Stock Case Until Lower Courts Weigh In

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up a legal challenge to the Trump administration’s regulatory ban on bump stocks, with one of the court’s Trump-appointed justices explaining that the issue needs more time to work through in the lower courts.

The case at hand — Guedes v. ATF — turns heavily on a Supreme Court precedent known as “Chevron deference.” The term was coined after the 1984 Chevron v. NRDC ruling, which provided a framework for when courts should defer to federal agencies’ “reasonable interpretation” of vague laws passed by instead of imposing their own. Conservatives have long taken issue with the precedent, arguing that it gives too much power to the administrative state.

In 2018, the Justice Department announced the new regulation classifying bump stocks as “machine guns” under federal law, despite the fact that they do not change the firing action of a semi-automatic firearm.

In their petition for the Supreme Court to take up the case, the plaintiffs argued that lower courts had incorrectly applied Chevron precedent in upholding the bump stock ban, and should have instead applied a different, less deferential standard for evaluating it.

In an opinion explaining why the Guedes petition was denied, Justice Neil Gorsuch agreed with the idea that the Chevron deference had been incorrectly applied, noting that the administration had even asked the lower court to waive it.

“The executive branch and affected citizens asked the court to do what courts usually do in statutory interpretation disputes: supply its best independent judgment about what the law means,” the justice wrote. “But, instead of deciding the case the old-fashioned way, the court placed an uninvited thumb on the scale in favor of the government.

Gorsuch went on to write that deferring to the government’s interpretation of the law might not be appropriate for other reasons, too.

“The agency used to tell everyone that bump stocks don’t qualify as ‘machine guns.’ Now it says the opposite,” the justice wrote.

“The law hasn’t changed, only an agency’s interpretation of it. And these days it sometimes seems agencies change their statutory interpretations almost as often as elections change administrations,”

“Before deciding whether to weigh in, we would benefit from hearing their considered judgments — provided, of course, that they are not afflicted with the same problems,” Gorsuch concluded. “But waiting should not be mistaken for lack of concern.”

As much as I respect President Trump, I think he was rather knee-jerk in this situation. Sure, I think these are rather silly devices, and that one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch. But the way to handle this is through level headed legislation ... if you can find some.

Thank God, Or A Nascent Recall

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s push to ban the sale of assault weapons has failed after members of his own party balked at the proposal.

Senators voted to shelve the bill for the year and ask the state crime commission to study the issue, an outcome that drew cheers from a committee room packed with gun advocates.

Four moderate Democrats joined Republicans in Monday’s committee vote, rejecting legislation that would have prohibited the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms, including popular AR-15 style rifles, and banned the possession of magazines that hold more than 12 rounds.

The bill was a top priority for Northam, a Democrat who has campaigned heavily for a broad package of gun-control measures.

The legislation also engendered the biggest pushback from gun owners and gun-right advocates, who accused the governor and others of wanting to confiscate commonly owned guns and accessories from law-abiding gun owners. Northam has said repeatedly he does not want to confiscate guns, but argued that banning new sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines would help prevent mass murders.

Virginia is the current epicenter of the country’s heated debate over gun control and mass shootings. Tens of thousands of gun-rights activists from across the country flooded the state Capitol and surrounding area in protest, some donning tactical gear and carrying military-style rifles.

Northam has been able to get much of his gun-control agenda passed this year, but struggled with the proposed assault weapon ban. Earlier proposals to ban possession of AR-15-style rifles or to require owners to register them with state police have been scrapped. The governor had hoped a watered-down would win over enough Democratic moderates for passage.

Don’t celebrate too much. I know the underhanded strategy here. Toss out a whopper of an overreach bill, and let it get shot down. Meanwhile, push through a truckload of nickle-and-dime bills like the one linked above, and hope that most of them fly under the radar. This is slavery by incrementalism, and for too long the people have not put a stop to it. From now on, EVERY damn bill must be scrutinized to the fullest.

Both chambers have passed some of Northam’s proposed gun control measures, and will hash out any differences between their respective versions in coming weeks. Those include limiting handgun purchases to once a month; universal background checks on gun purchases; and a red flag bill that would allow authorities to temporarily take guns away from anyone deemed to be dangerous to themselves or others.

Virginia House Bill 961—“a ban under the guise of compromise”—was tabled for a full year by the state Senate Judiciary Committee. Townhall’s Lawrence Keane warned last week that the bill would have banned “the sale of semiautomatic firearms that are commonly used for self-defense, recreational and competitive shooting and hunting, as well as suppressors.” Worse, “standard capacity magazine possession would become a crime” under HD961—or would have, had it passed. That seemed the likely result just up until minutes ago.

This morning’s vote hinged on four Democrats who broke ranks to side with Republicans in opposition to HB961.

Keep in mind that the bill will come back for consideration in 2021. Since that isn’t a presidential election year, it’s a sure thing Democrats hope they’ll be able to move HB961 forward again—but under the radar.

Stay vigilant.

Former Colorado Springs Mayoral Candidate And Her Daughter Arrested For Attempted Baby Kidnapping And For Drugging Infant’s Mother

A former Colorado Springs mayoral candidate and her 16-year-old daughter have been arrested after allegedly drugging a woman in an attempt to steal her newborn.

Juliette Parker - who ran for mayor in 2019 - was charged with multiple felonies after she and the unidentified minor were detained Friday at her home on the 4100 block of 220 Street East at around 2.30pm.

Parker was charged with a count of assault in the second degree and attempted kidnapping, according to booking records.

A release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department state that the pair were arrested following an extensive investigation and after reports that they may have been posing as newborn baby photographers.

Operating under an alias, Ms. Parker pretended to be a photographer taking free baby pictures to establish her portfolio. She made several visits to one home, taking plenty of pictures of the kid but also selfies of herself and the baby. And then her daughter fed the new mom a laced cupcake ...

Parker received about a third of the votes for mayor in 2019. I never heard of her before today, and the only thing I noticed is that she has an extensive chest tattoo featuring a bunch of birds. Research shows all the Colorado candidates were labeled as Independents.

Alabama Forced Vasectomy Bill

Alabama State Legislator Rolanda Hollis (D) has introduced a bill requiring all men who father 3 children, and all men over the age of 50, to have a vasectomy. This bill will go nowhere, but she introduced it as payback for the State’s recent abortion law, which would limit abortion to within a 10 days of conception, or in cases of ectopic pregnancy, or in cases of “lethal anomaly” of the fetus. The Republican governor, Kay Ivey signed the bill into law in May 2019 knowing full well that it would be shot down. The federal courts almost immediately did just that, blocking it in October 2019 before it went into effect.

Since 1837 Alabama has been dominated by Democrats in their legislator and governor, except for a few years after the Civil War, but has had a Republican governor since 2003 and Republican dominated houses since 2011.

So this is empty virtue signalling. Every one of these laws has been throw out AFAIK.

But then I wondered, why is it that a blanket SCOTUS decision abort abortion can not be infringed upon in any way shape or form, yet the Second Amendment, which pre-dates even the Supreme Court, and specifically says it can not be infringed, is subject to all kinds of limitations all over the nation?? Abortion - which many people consider to be murder - is sacrosanct, but the right to protect yourself from being murdered is open to constant (always negative) interpretation. Go figure. It must be raycism at work again. Or Trump. Or Climate Change.

If You’re This Unlearned You Shouldn’t Write The Rules

And this fool got elected to make the laws in Virginia.

Pro-Second Amendment groups fighting gun control efforts in Virginia have seized on a video showing the author of a sweeping ban fumbling over defining the “assault weapons” he wants to outlaw.

In the video, Democratic Virginia Del. Mark Levine said the biggest difference between hunting rifles and “assault weapons” is “how you hold the gun.”

Speaking at a public meeting, the author of legislation to ban AR-style guns and large, bullet-holding magazines used in semi-automatic weapons also said shooters could use several fingers to pull the trigger and that deer know the sound of a bullet shot through a “silencer” better than humans.

As audience members were heard chuckling in the background, Levine said: “In terms of the differences of the guns, the heart of the difference is how you hold the gun. It makes it a semi-automatic.” He showed his trigger finger moving, and added, “Meaning you can shoot with each finger, not like a bolt-action” rifle typically used in hunting.

Maybe this was another “parody” in the Adam Schiff school of stand-up mode. What an idiot. BTW, this guy was one of the authors of the latest gun control bill working it’s way through the Virginia legislature.

“He knows nothing about what he’s trying to ban,” said Erich Pratt, senior vice president of Gun Owners of America. “Obviously, he’s watched too many movies,” he said, noting that semi-automatic rifles and bolt-action rifles are held the same way.

Phil Van Cleave, who heads the Virginia Citizens Defense League, said, “It’s clear that he’s way out of league, and he’s the one trying to make law.”

Levine did not respond to a request for comment.

Both VCDL and GOA organized this month’s massive pro-gun rally at the Virginia Capitol in Richmond.

While the new Democratic majority has pushed through several gun control measures, efforts to OK a ban on semi-automatic rifles have not moved forward.

Well, at least Levine didn’t mention the infamous and frightening “front part that goes up”.

And I have no idea why a Virginia town hall would be displaying “flags of all nations” but not the American flag nor the Virginia flag. Probably a bunch of anti-American One Worlder commies.

West Virginia Makes The Play

Dammit, I have to learn to write concisely. That last post took forever, for a really niche story that won’t interest many. Ok, so let’s keep this one short.

West Virginia Offers To Take All Of Virginia’s Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties

A huge “screw you” to the leftists in charge in Richmond.

It started in 1863. Because freedom. Actually, it started in 1775 but nobody paid them any attention.

A huge chunk of Virginia’s counties and their biggest city have now gone Second Amendment Sanctuary.

Last week West Virginia offered to take Fredrick County, half of which went over to West Virginia in 1863.

Virginia is for lovers, so West Virginia is reviving a 158-year-old proposal to ask one of its counties on a date. The answer, apparently, is still no.

The West Virginia Senate adopted a resolution by voice vote Monday to remind residents of Frederick County, Virginia, that the county has a standing invite — from 1862 — to become part of West Virginia. It now goes to the House of Delegates.

The resolution was introduced by Morgan County Republican Charles Trump, whose district borders Frederick County. Trump was born in Winchester, the seat of Frederick, which is Virginia’s northernmost county.

Now West Virginia has upped the ante, and has offered to take ALL the 2A counties.

In a display of pro-Second Amendment solidarity, a group of West Virginia lawmakers have introduced a resolution inviting Virginia counties frustrated by gun control efforts to switch states.

Delegates in the lower house of the West Virginia Legislature put the proposal forth on Tuesday. House Concurrent Resolution 8 would allow certain Virginia counties and independent cities to be admitted to West Virginia as constituent counties.

The group of 20 West Virginia Republicans, and one Independent, introducing the resolution said in the proposal that Virginia lawmakers have repudiated “the counsel of that tribune of liberty, Patrick Henry-who stated to the Virginia Ratifying Convention in 1788 that ‘The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.’”

“[T]he government at Richmond now seeks to place intolerable restraints upon the rights guaranteed under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution to the citizens of [Virginia,]” the proposal reads.

If it passes, the Virginia General Assembly would need to approve the resolution as well, and hold an election prior to August 1, 2020 allowing residents in Virginia counties to vote on whether they’d like to join West Virginia.

If this happens, WV will double or triple in size, get lots more electoral votes, take in most of the rural and white population of Virginia, and leave Olde Virginny being little more than a bedroom community around Washington DC.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of leftists.

Little Big Gun

Big heavy bullets at moderate velocity: the one gun hunting solution without tremendous recoil. And it will work in a full size “assault weapon” with just a barrel swap. Or in a regular bolt gun. Without spending a ton of money.

In 2014, the 45 RAPTOR brought Big Bore performance to the AR10 / LR308 rifle platform and extended the range of Big Bore Modern Sporting Rifles to 200-yards. 
Not one to rest on our past accomplishments, we continued our research and the result is the 375 RAPTOR – an evolutionary step forward in Modern Sporting Rifle performance delivering Big-Bore hunting performance out to 400 yards while eliminating proprietary rifle parts or ammunition components.

The 375 RAPTOR is created using abundant commercial 308 Winchester or military 7.62 NATO brass. The process is easily performed by any hand-loader using common loading tools.

There are hundreds of different designs of rifle cartridge out there, and since these things were invented back in the early 1870s, probably at least a thousand have come and gone. But sometimes a niche exists that the factories don’t fill. And that’s what wildcatting is all about: build your own from the ground up, or have some custom gunsmithing done and use one of these oddball rounds other folks have figured out. Whatever else, there’s a strong sense of individuality involved.

Back in the 80s and 90s, all the young guys drove Mustangs and Camaros. Popular. Ubiquitous. Great fun, but rather common. “Another pathetic sheep, following the heard.”, as “Joe Isuzu” used to say in the commercials.  I had 2 Mercury Capri RS in those days. Same performance as a Mustang GT, but a totally different look. In the 14 years I drove those cars, I saw only 1 other car just like mine, once. I liked that feeling. Now I have a Soul Red Mazda 3 GT. It’s a great car, awesome paint, and when I bought mine it was a rare bird. So rare that I had to order it from Japan. Nowadays you can’t go around the block without seeing a bright red Mazda, and every vehicle they make looks the same. At least mine is a GT, with the parchment white leather interior and a manual shift. So it’s a common car, but an uncommon build.

I like pushing the envelope. I like the unusual. I like “orphan” guns that look good and shoot well but are in cartridges that are rather overlooked or forgotten. I spent a number of years doing load development for the “level 3” .45-70, using a gorgeous Browning 1885 Highwall rifle. I wore the barrel out, and now it’s a wall hanger. But I learned a whole lot, and I tried to do the work in an intelligent manner, using the Quick-Load software package, tons of online research, a good chronograph, and some common sense. What I found was that, in a big heavy long barreled and very strong falling block rifle, with the chamber reamed for a half diameter long tight parallel throat and a low angle leade, I could safely create ammunition that would launch a 300 grain bullet at 2600 feet per second. Recoil was significant, even after I had filled the Browning’s hollow walnut stock with birdshot, giving me an 11lb rifle with scope. 300 grains at 2600fps is what a .300 Holland & Holland Magnum safari rifle can do, and that kind of power is sufficient to hunt the largest creatures on the planet. In any kind of normal weight gun, the recoil is phenomenal.

One thing that I did learn is that painful recoil, which can be calculated, is not really related to the strength of the recoil impulse, but to the impulse velocity. You won’t really notice a recoil impulse of 10 feet per second or less, even if the strength of the impulse is well over 20 pounds. But if that impulse gets over 15 feet per second, the “shove” becomes a “sharp kick” and then if the impulse strength gets up over 35lb it becomes “I just got punched by Mike Tyson with an axe”. And that is not a pleasant thing. Been there, done that, trust me. So keep the impulse strength to 20lb or less, and try and keep the impulse velocity below 15 fps. And the way to do that is with a heavy rifle. Get a good walnut stock, not a plastic one. Use a thicker contour barrel of a normal length. If you want to shoot heavy rifles, you need the mass. 9lb is a starting point. But if your plan is to make your own little junior hot rod, like this .375 Raptor, and you don’t load it to the ragged high edge, you can get away with 7 1/2 or 8lb. The used gun racks are full of flyweight superloudenboomer short barrel magnums for two reasons. Evil recoil and hearing loss. You’re not fighting house to house in Fallujah. You don’t need a 16” barrel. 22” or 24” is right, and adds another 12 ounces or so of mass. Happy gun for happy hunting.

This wildcat round is all about filling the gap. Oh, and making a stubby round you can use in an AR-10, which is the man sized version of the AR-15. While the AR-15 “poodle shooter” fires the 5.56 NATO cartridge or it’s civilian brother called the .223, the AR-10 is a bigger, heavier rifle that shoots the 7.62 NATO round, and it’s civilian brother called the .308. Night and day difference in bullet mass: the 5.56 tops out with bullets of about 70 grains, while the 7.62 starts with bullets of about 168 grains. It’s a lot more powerful.

So, the “gap”. A very long time ago there was a blackpowder cowboy cartridge called the .38-55. About a century later a modern version hit the market called the .375 Winchester. It could shoot a .375” diameter bullet of relatively light weight at about 2200fps. Moderate here means 220 grains, which is light for a .375 rifle but at the very heavy end of bullets for a .308 rifle. So there’s a big gap between what the .375Win can do and what the .300 H&H can do. And the .375 Raptor fills that gap, depending on how you load it.

230gr at up to 2625fps
250gr at up to 2465fps
300gr at up to 2250fps

Ok, it “fills the gap” not quite in the middle, but a bit towards the .38-55 end. If you want to fill the gap more towards the .300 H&H end, another version exists called the .375 Hawk-Scovill, which is based on the .30-06 cartridge, which is the longer, older, parent of the 7.62 NATO round, and it won’t fit in an AR-10 no matter what. .30-06 rounds are 3.34” long, .308 rounds are 2.8” long, .223 rounds are 2.25” long, .300 H&H is 3.6” long, and the venerable .45-70 and .30-30 are 2.55” long). So the .375 Hawk needs a standard length action, and that usually means a bolt action rifle.

OTOH, velocity equals range, power, and recoil. A 230gr bullet in .375 is plenty for deer at any distance, but loaded down to 2300fps it should be good to 200 yards - a responsible hunting distance - and not break your shoulder or burst your eardrums when fired. Similarly, a 250gr bullet is plenty for bears, and 2450fps is (marginally) manageable recoil in an 8.5lb rifle. That one gives you 2200lb/ft of impact energy at 200 yards, moving at 2000fps. Plenty of bear flattening power and enough final velocity to ensure proper bullet performance. If you shoot enough already to own you own reloading equipment, building this rifle won’t cost much more than ordering a good barrel, buying a short action bolt gun, and having your gunsmith rent a reamer and put it all together.

Old Guns, Again

Sunday’s Time Waster

In which an odd corner of an old illustration causes Drew to sieve the internet looking for information that doesn’t exist, coming up with loads of interesting links and eating up half the afternoon.

Somewhere online I ran across a picture of a medieval illustration of the attack on Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. This was on April 12, 1204.

This painting was done, probably by a bunch of monks, somewhere in the 15th Century, around the 1450s; a couple hundred years later. This was long before Byzantium fell to the muslim horde and became Istanbul. The attackers were western European Christians, the defenders were eastern European Christians. Eastern Orthodox, with a lot of Greeks. This is the big “act of betrayal” from that messed up Crusade where the Venetians sacked cities to recoup their investments, after having turned their entire economy upside down for more than a year to equip and transport the vast army of soldiers and horses promised by the pope that never materialized. They were hundreds of thousands of marks in the hole, equivalent to tens of millions of dollars in today’s terms.

Venice was a trading nation, with almost no land or resources, but was really good at buying and selling. Situated on a river delta / tidal swamp up at the top of the Adriatic on the east side of Italy, they were the pivot point between Europe and the far East. Nominally Catholic Christians, but they put religion on the back burner and got down to business, unlike a large chunk of the world in those days, who put piety at the very top of their life list. So there were tensions with Rome, all sorts of politics and intrigues, etc. But Venice became rich, while the rest of Europe plodded along with feudalism and subsistence agriculture.

Anyway, looking closely at the illustration, I saw this:

That’s a gun, baby. A fire stick. A “hand gonne”, “culverin”, or “hand bombard”. *

And therein lies the problem. The standard article of faith is that Marco Polo brought back several things from China: pasta, paper, gunpowder, VD, and the plague. Problem is, old Marco wasn’t born until 50 years after this attack happened. So where did the gun come from?

“Respected authorities” put the beginning of firearms in Europe around the 1320s. But what is their definition of Europe? I’m sure Hungary counts themselves part of it, but perhaps we’ve got some “just the north” kind of centrism here.

The Chinese had bombs, rockets, fireworks, and possibly cannons and guns for several centuries before this. Marco Polo was not the first westerner in China. There is strong evidence that the Mongol horde - a pre-islamic invasion, at first - used some kind of guns when they attacked Hungary at the Battle of Mohi in 1241. But China didn’t attack Hungary, or Constantinople. The Mongols did. KHAN!!!. Um, the same Mongols who were just beginning to take over China at this time. Good old “Jenghis” Khan ( and his happy buddy Kubla? Turns out that Xanadu was real ). But good technology spreads quickly, and the Silk Road ( that both Venice and Constantinople lie alongside ) was a knowledge corridor as well as a caravan route. So it wasn’t impossible.

On the other hand, a lot of these old medieval paintings aren’t precisely factually accurate. The whole style back then was to make pictures of ancient events and fill them with people dressed in the current fashions of Europe. You know, David and Goliath wearing doublets and hose, with pointy cloth shoes. And Middle Ages armor. Um, riiight. So maybe the gonne got in there by accident, put in by a bored monk tired of drawing swords and horses.  On the third hand, the other weapons in the picture are accurate to the period, and the period was a slow one. It’s not like they reinvented the wheel every 18 months like we do today. R&D was nearly at a standstill. Heck, these guys wouldn’t even figure out the horse collar for another couple hundred years (another Chinese import? They’d had them for 800 years at that point).

The thing is, the internet being so broad and deep, that I could not find a single mention of this oddity in this rather common illustration. Not even a few words supporting it or decrying it. Nada. I can’t be the first person to have noticed this in 575 years, can I?

* : Interesting aside: by 1410 the French had a “murderer”, a small pintle mounted swivel cannon with a locking breech and cartridge ammunition. While pretty rough in form, such a gun loaded with lead or iron shot could wreak mayhem, and would have a pretty fast rate of fire - at least 10 rounds a minute - if several of the cast iron bottle shaped cartridges were available. Seriously, there isn’t much new in firearms design that hasn’t been around for centuries longer than most people know.

This wrought iron thing was also known as a Pierrier à boîte, a thrower of stones. Perrier is the English version of the word. While not the tightest design, this kind of breech loading anti-personnel swivel gun quickly caught on all around the world, and was used for centuries ... as late as the Moro uprising in the Philippines in 1904.

And There Goes Virginia Beach

Story is a couple days old now. Most of the counties in Virginia have already gone 2A Sanctuary, but the cities are where most of the people are.

The City of Virginia Beach voted 6-4 last night to become a ‘Second Amendment Constitutional City’.

Per WKTR, Mayor Dyer, Vice Mayor Wood, Council Members Moss, Abbott, Berlucchi and Wilson all voted yes.

This resort town, home to 460,000 people, is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Republican activist and Virginia Beach resident Scott Presler tweeted the final vote:

In a 6-4 vote, Virginia Beach is now a Second Amendment Constitutional City.

I heard reports from several people on the ground that upwards of 1,700 concerned residents in favor of this resolution were present. That’s impressive.

While this move doesn’t have as much teeth as the sanctuary county votes, it’s a symbolic gesture showing Virginia Beach, home to several military installations and next door to the world’s largest naval base, is reliably pro-gun.

This vote to affirm support for the Second Amendment will stun gun control activists, who thought they could exploit that tragedy that befell the city on May 31st, 2019. However, many survivors of the municipal building felt these interests exploited this tragedy for their cause. One survivor, Vincent Smith, told WAVY back in November he hoped the city would become a sanctuary Second Amendment city

So, the new left wing Virginia legislature is now in session. Let’s see what they do. And let’s see how the people react. I’d like to send Virginia a Gadsden flag, but somehow I kind of think they’ve got them raised already. In their souls.

Virginia Sheriff Plans To Deputize Whole County To Loophole New Gun Laws

Sheriff Scott Jenkins of Culpeper County, Va. proposed a way to exempt citizens from newly proposed Virginia gun laws that might otherwise bar them from owning certain firearms.

In a Wednesday Facebook post, Jenkins warned that some of the gun laws proposed in the Virginia General Assembly would “disarm or handicap our law-abiding in their defense,” and in turn suggested he would confer the label of deputy on thousands of law-abiding citizens to include them in law enforcement carve-outs included in new gun legislation.

“I remain very optimistic that our General Assembly will not pass the proposed bills. Obviously, if passed, there are many of us willing to challenge these laws through the courts,” Jenkins said. “In addition, if necessary, I plan to properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.”

Kind of sounds like he’s making a militia. And if he does deputize all these people, what then? By rights, he should be able to call them up as necessary ... and wouldn’t that mean they get paid for such service? Other than that, this sounds like a great idea.
